“The sunflower state. In the summers, it’s hot as hell and in the winter colder than ice. It’s a pretty flat state, except for the rolling Flint Hills. In the spring, we burn the plains to cultivate new life and restore our native grass. I grew up listening to tornado sirens but my Dad and I would just sit on the porch trying to catch a glimpse of one. When I was young I’d go to summer camp and we’d play in a creek and catch crawdads, while enduring hundreds of mosquito bites and blistering sunburns.”
