“Biracial: I’m half Japanese and half American. Born in Japan on a US Air Force base and lived there for 7 years until we moved to Alabama in 2000.We enjoy Japanese entertainment so we always had videos sent to us to watch but I never expressed it outwardly during my youth fearing that I would be the “weird” kid, but at the same time was not immersed enough in American culture to feel fully “American”. There’s a constant inner struggle to juggle being American enough to not be seen odd but having to keep up with being Japanese, and when I visit Japan I’m still seen as a foreigner because of my looks and way I act even though I speak fluent Japanese. People see it as a gift to be multi-national, but people don’t understand the struggle many of us have of never feeling “at home” in either of our home countries because we are treated as foreigners in both.”
