The Isle of Harris

£65.00

An original painting from the hike up harp hill collection.

“Wind, so much wind. We spent a week wild camping on the beaches there and ended up getting really jealous of people with vans because they had somewhere to sit out of the wind! We were in awe of the strength of the pegs holding peoples washing on the lines. We watched people digging up peat on the moors and thought about that heavy, earthy smell when it’s burnt. The beaches were pure white and the lightest turquoise with baby blue skies. The southeast was an alien landscape of craggy rock, sea inlets and spots of green. The mountainous area was like a huge sleeping dragon snoozing in the middle of the island. Tweed is everywhere and you totally understand why – need warmth and wind proofing even in early summer. The smells to me are salt, peat, wet wool and smoke. The houses are squat with big thick walls and heavy red tin or thatch roofs. The people are so friendly and sound like they are singing when they talk, sounds like a totally different dialect to Scottish.
