“It’s HOT, and the air smells warm and sweet – kind of like sugar and cinnamon. The sky is the most amazing blue and loads of the houses are really old and painted pastel colours. In February, they celebrate Mardis Gras and everyone gets out in the street and parties wearing purple, green and gold. There’s music everywhere – people play jazz outside and dance. If you head to the bayous – the swamps – you’ll find alligators and Spanish moss that hangs from the trees like greeny grey candy floss and blows in the breeze. The bayou is all greys and greens and flat, dark water. Paddle boats float on the dark Mississippi river, polluted and mighty. Most places in this state are run down and falling apart, but they’re bright and covered in green moss.”
